Turning desert communities to specialized farm producers

Arid and semi-arid lands are home to more than 20% of the global population today. Underserved communities especially in the Middle East have been struggling to earn a living and support their families due to hard living conditions caused by scarcity of resources and restless armed conflicts.

Tracing back the long history of these Arabian desert lands, we discovered how prosperous and agricultural-rich they once were thousand years ago. We studied the possibilities to bring back that world in the hopes of creating evergreen opportunities and life values they deserve.

“1 / 3 of people in the world are living in drylands where economic opportunity is lacking.”

To empower the economy through wonders of agriculture, we established farms of drought-resistant crops on vacant, marginal locations where economic activity is very low. The reason is to make sure we do not compete or take away resources from anyone, especially those who are already successful in their business.

+100 local families have improved their lives through our projects

We collaborate with local partners to maximize the effectiveness of our farming activities and yields thanks to modern agricultural innovation and know-how. State-of-the-art factories for processing and packaging are established, resulting in value-added outcomes, higher employment rates, thus, improved local economy. Farmers see the opportunity to join hands in projects and training for growth, while women and children are invited to participate in agricultural programs and workshops that help them discover their potential and values.

We make our farmers the proud producers and ensure that the great products will be appreciated by the right audience. Every product sold will have a part of its profit go back to where it started – the communities. Not in the form of donation, but rather a funding to the upcoming and expanding agricultural initiatives meant to contribute to long-term development.

Sustainable farming that flourishes drylands

With the expansion of drylands and desertification, our planet is experiencing a decrease of freshwater due to its exploded population and water consumption. Only 0.5% of total water in this world is considered accessible freshwater – the most essential resource for our lives.

“ 70% OF ALL FRESHWATER ON THIS PLANET IS CONSUMED BY THE FOOD AND AGRICULTURAL SECTOR. ”

With that fact, the most water-consuming activities like farming and food can no longer remain unchanged. At Yuri & Terra, we have transformed hectares of desperate lands into farms to ease poverty and bring prosperity, using the most resource-conscious method possible.

“3X LESS IS THE AMOUNT OF WATER OUR PERENNIAL JOJOBA CONSUMES COMPARED TO OLIVES.”

Our team did in-depth research on farming drought-tolerant plants that require minimal water to grow but offer uncompromised benefits, along with the ecological factors once the farms are established in the selected environment. After ensuring the plan is well thought out and would be a wonderful success, we equipped the farm with one of the most sustainable water supply systems called ‘drip irrigation’.

Drip irrigation system (or micro irrigation) is the system where water tubes with tiny emitters are placed on the ground alongside the trees, allowing the water to drip slowly and directly to the roots. This method ensures that water will not evaporate or go to waste on unnecessary parts of the plants, or elsewhere. With a manual control on the system, the team can practically analyze the amount of water needed, if there is any, after each rainfall.

“ WITH MICRO IRRIGATION, WE CAN CONTROL AN AVERAGE DAILY WATER USAGE TO BE AS LITTLE AS 1.5L / TREE ”

Besides land and water resources, we make sure none of the crops go to waste and all that remains will go back to the producers for good use. Our yields have turned to the products made from nature that are delightful, safe and essential to one’s holistic wellbeing. The pure and clean formulations mean no harm to the environment and the ocean, while the high-quality packaging is designed to go back to the recycling system, not in a landfill.

The word ‘Terra’ is not only defined by how we use natural resources, protect them and convey their values for our future generations, but on the consumer side, ‘Terra’ also reflects the world where our society can lead a conscious lifestyle and embrace a positive view on what beauty is. The society where everyone gets liberated from toxic, unhealthy standards and loves to respect  one's true self, others, and the planet.
